Book Description

Is the only thing keeping you warm at night the heat generated from your laptop? Dovyou commonly forget your anniversary or loved one’s birthday because a server went down? Did you receive this book as a gift from concerned colleagues?

Lisa Whaley wants to you let in you on a not-so-well-kept secret: You are a PRISONER OF TECHNOLOGY! Whaley, a former IBM executive and ex-prisoner of technology, knows the all-too-familiar feeling of being trapped in the clutches of chords and cables. During one sunny summer afternoon, Whaley found herself completely entangled in the grasp of a fury of devices designed to simplify her life. Listening to a teleconference on a cordless speakerphone, she cranked out emails on a wireless Internet connection on her laptop while instant-messaging a friend and navigating a voice menu prompt on her cell phone in search of a live person, and she realized that she had a problem. "I couldn’t help but wonder if I was the stud muffin of multitasking or just the jack of stupidity."

Prisoners of Technology offers a humorous yet sobering look at the challenges we face with having the means to abuse the privilege of technology. We are all familiar with the trials of achieving balance as employees, spouses, parents and friends. Technology is meant to simplify, yet often complicates this process. With outrageous anecdotes and sound advice from a team of experts, Prisoners explains the psychology behind the constant need to be connected and offers eight simple strategies to unplug and put the correct balance back in your life and work.
