Irish Tales captures the essence of folklore told by Irish immigrant Mary Dunne Ware (1860-1956) to her grandson, Ed McManus, during the last years of her life.
Ware was born in Lixnaw, County Kerry, Ireland, in 1860, and immigrated to America in 1883 to live in Fitchburg, MA, before moving to Boston. In her eighties, blind and unable to walk, Ware spent the remaining sixteen years of her life living with the McManus family on Temple Street in Fitchburg. Affectionately known as “The Nana in the Chair” to the McManus family, Ware told stories of 19th-century Ireland and early 20th-century Boston to McManus and his siblings every day.
Entertaining, amusing, and often making a gentle point, the stories
of Irish Tales capture of very best of Irish oral history passed down
over generations.
